Juk sapnų forma leidžia išvengti literatūriškumo, o klausytojams, kurie tikriausiai visi žino Miunhauzeno istorijas mintinai, leistis į pasąmonės vaizdinių fantazijas, man pirštu nebedant į konkrečius barono pasakojimus. Pasirinktas sapnų laikas taipogi (paryčiai, popietė, snaudulys, naktis) yra skirtingų būsenų erdvės. Juk visai kitaip grimztama į sapnus nakties miego viduryje ir paryčiais. Borisas atsiuntė man keletą svarbių nuorodų.

Ketvirta dalis – „Gilioj nakty“. Finalas.

I have an old creative friendship with the violinist Boris Livschitz, who lives in Nice. When he offered to create a Violin Concerto with an orchestra during a telephone conversation, I asked – „what’s the idea?”, he immediately answered – Baron Munchausen. I went to work immediately, but the question stopped me – what angle should I put that „fantasier” to music? I rushed to look for sources, references. And I thought it would be a dreamy Munchausen. After all, the form of dreams allows us to avoid literalism, and for the listeners, who probably all know Munchausen’s stories by heart, to indulge in the fantasies of subconscious images, without me pointing the finger at the baron’s specific stories. The chosen dream time (morning, afternoon, nap, night) is also a space of different states. After all, it is quite different to sink into dreams in the middle of a night’s sleep and in the morning. Boris sent me some important links. I didn’t stop searching either. One of them turned out to be unexpectedly symbolic – in 1911, the avant-garde French cinematographer Georges Méliès created the 11-minute film „Les Hallucinations du Baron de Münchhausen”. At the beginning of the third minute of the film, I saw the scene that led to the proposal with the violinist playing for the sleeping Munchausen in his dream. What followed was purely technical work – transferring the „musicals” gathered in my head to the computer program „Sibelius”. At the beginning of September, I sent the sheet music for the violin concerto „Four Dreams of Baron Munchausen” to Boris. A month had passed since his call…

I sent the first part of „ At Daybreak” to Boris on 2022 August 8. I thought that while I work on the next parts, Boris will have time to get used to the music and solutions of the first part. And quite a few of them are paradoxes, suddenly interrupted dreams. After all, in the mornings they are always very short, confused and not related to each other in any way. The entire movement ends with the unexpected „ka-ka-rie-kū” of the clarinet – a sharp awakening of the baron.

The second part is „After a delicious lunch”. I added „Eine kokette Romanze / flirtatious romance” to the metronome mark. That romance seems to have been sung in an hour of peace, but with sequences of rather defined images, Munchausen’s love adventures, thrills, confusions, searches and again – pleasant interactions are remembered. A hearty and delicious lunch gives birth to luxurious dreams with rich meanings in them. The five strikes of the wall clock open this section – the five o’clock lunch begins. In a dream. After an hour, six beats continue the trapeze, and the ritual ends with seven beats drowning in dreams. The shape of the part is an irregular rondeau. It was as if I heard the baron’s incredible stories to his two wives – the first, quite noble Jacobine von Dunten (died 1790) and three years before his death (1794) the 74-year-old baron’s second wife, the 20-year-old beauty Bernhardine Brunsig von Brunn, with whom he soon, unsatisfied her frivolous and spendthrift manner, tried, after suffering great financial losses, to end the marriage in the courts. This part is the baron’s unknown, unwritten, but maybe existing stories, which he could add to them by seasoning them with the sauces of his uncontrollable fantasy.

The third part – „Snoozing” – I added to the tempo instruction – „wie eine Nocturne am Tag / like a daytime nocturne”. It is very calm, even-breathing music, born only in a completely empty space and an absolutely empty head. There are no stories, fantasies, even hints are barely audible here. However… And in this slumbering music there is knowledge – even very unexpected ones. The daytime nocturne has its secrets, and only those whose imaginations know no bounds will hear what stories Baron Munchausen weaves in his head during the blissful minutes of dozing. I finished the part on August 25th. and also, like other times, I immediately sent it to Boris.

The fourth part – „Deep night”. The final. It is dominated by hunting motifs. I found this in Robert Schumann’s piano piece „Hunting Song” (op.68 no.7, 1848). With this motive, I open the „hunting fantasy season”. For Münchausen, this activity provided a lot of fodder for his creation of incredible adventures. But I did not seek to transfer those stories to music. This part is a farewell not only to the Baron’s stories, which everyone listening to the Concert can recreate in their own way, but also to the Baron himself. Only legends remain: his fantasies and himself – Baron Munchausen. The concert ends with a short phrase with which it began.

I finished the part on September 3rd and sent it to Boris the next day.
