…Sako: jei penkių minučių kūriniui reikia valandos aiškinimui, nėra gerai. Sako: kūrinys pats už save turi kalbėti ir būti aiškus be ilgų pristatymų. Tiesa, yra atvejų, kai tai padaryti būtina – ar dėl kūrinio specifikos, ar dėl visuomenei visai nežinomų, tačiau kūrinio atsklaidai labai svarbių, kūrinyje neatskleidžiamų aplinkybių. Vokiečių rašytojas Thomas Mannas yra net Romaną apie romaną parašęs, kuriame detaliai nagrinėja kito savo romano Daktaras Faustus turinį ir prasmę. Mano argumentai kiek kitokie – ne tiek apie savo kūrinį čia rašau, kiek apie jį pagimdžiusias aplinkybes. Lietuvoje anglų rašytojo sero Terence David John Pratchett’o (1948-2015), literatūros pasaulyje žinomo trumpesniu Terry Pratchett’o vardu kūryba žinoma, tačiau ne taip, kaip vėliau jo idėjas į suprantamesnę erdvę perkėlusi knygų serialo herojaus Harry Potter’io fantastinių nuotykių autorė Joanne Rowling, sumaniai ir talentingai tęsianti Pratchett pradėtą savitų britų legendų ciklo tradiciją. Didžiulis įmantriai susietų apysakų ciklas Discworld (Plokščiasis pasaulis) Vakarų pasaulyje tapo tikru prekės ženklu ir trijų (kol kas) į lietuvių kalbą išverstų knygų dėka pasiekė mūsų skaitytojus. Iš jų įspūdingiausia – Skrybėlė, pilna dangaus, kurią meistriškai išvertė Danguolė Žalytė, įveikusi specifinę, vertėjams keblią Terry Pratchett’o kalbą, potekstes, nesibaigiančią sąmojų ir sąvokų žaismę. Tiesa, rašytojo literatūrinė kalba specifinė ir vertėjams labai sunku perteikti anglų kalbos niuansus, potekstes, žodžių, sąmojų bei sąvokų žaismę. Atradęs šią neįtikėtinai aktualią ir žaismingą literatūrą panūdau bent kelias jos sukeltas vizijas ir mintis perkelti į muzikos pasaulį, kuris irgi dabar gana plokščias, ypač atsisakius turinio gilumo ir dvasios orumo. Taip gimė visą koncerto dalį užimanti septynių dalių simfonija Iš Plokščiojo pasaulio, kurioje savaip išgirdau Terry Pratchett’o sukurtų vaizdinių garsyną.

Dėkoju maestro Modestui Pitrėnui ir Lietuvos Nacionalinės filharmonijos simfoniniam orkestrui, kuriam ši simfonija ir skiriama kaip padėka už jų ryžtą garsinant ne tik šį mano naują kūrinį, bet ir visą lietuviškos simfoninės muzikos garsyną.

…They say: if a five-minute work needs an hour to explain, it’s not good. They say: the work must speak for itself and be clear without long presentations. True, there are cases when it is necessary to do this – either because of the specifics of the work, or because of circumstances that are completely unknown to the public, but very important for the dissemination of the work, and are not disclosed in the work. The German writer Thomas Mann even wrote a novel about a novel, in which he examines in detail the content and meaning of his other novel, Doctor Faustus. My arguments are somewhat different – ​​I am not writing so much about my work here as about the circumstances that gave birth to it. In Lithuania, the work of the English writer Sir Terence David John Pratchett (1948-2015), known in the literary world under the shorter name Terry Pratchett, is well known, but not as well as Joanne Rowling, the author of the fantastic adventures of the hero of the Harry Potter series, who later transferred his ideas to a more understandable space, skillfully and talentedly continuing the tradition of the cycle of peculiar British legends started by Pratchett. The huge cycle of intricately connected short stories Discworld (Discworld) has become a real brand in the Western world and has reached our readers thanks to three (so far) translated books into Lithuanian. The most impressive of them is Skrybėlė, plena kynaus, which was masterfully translated by Danguolė Žalytė, who mastered Terry Pratchett’s specific, difficult-for-translators language, subtexts, and endless play of wit and concepts. It is true that the writer’s literary language is specific and it is very difficult for translators to convey the nuances, subtexts, play of words, wit and concepts in the English language. Having discovered this incredibly relevant and playful literature, I felt compelled to transfer at least some of the visions and thoughts it evoked into the world of music, which is also quite flat now, especially after abandoning the depth of content and the dignity of spirit. Thus was born the seven-part symphony From the Flat World, which occupies the entire concert, in which I heard in my own way the soundscape of images created by Terry Pratchett.

I thank maestro Modestas Pitrėnas and the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, to whom this symphony is dedicated as a token of gratitude for their determination in promoting not only this new work of mine, but also the entire soundscape of Lithuanian symphonic music.

Hiver – a strange organism in many ways. They are like bodiless minds, but incapable of thought. Normally, they cannot be seen. Hiver being the French word for winter.

     3. Nuščiuvęs kraštovaizdis /Husted Landscape

…būtų pasakiusi, kad kraštovaizdis nuščiuvęs, o tai ne tas pats kaip nutilęs. Nuščiuvusios būna katedros vidurnaktį.
